About Us

Hi, and welcome to our blog! My name is Brittany McPherson and I am a 19 year old freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill. Right now I am working towards a pharmacy major, and while this decision may change I am positive I will pursue a career in the medical field. In my spare time I enjoy working out at the gym, traveling and just having a good time with friends. Our English 102 writing group is working hard to make this blog a success so I hope you all enjoy! Feel free to leave us feedback.

My name is Lacey Beam, and I’m a freshman here at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am from Kings Mountain, North Carolina and so far I love it here in Chapel Hill! I hope to major in Journalism and Mass Communications and pursue a career in Advertising.

My name is Meredith Cook and I am a freshman here at UNC, as is most of our class. I come from a small town in North Carolina and have always enjoyed English classes, even in high school. When I came to Carolina, I did not really know what to expect, but it has been amazing. My first semester here, I was in English 101 and really learned a lot about focusing my thesis in papers, but not as much I wanted to learn about actually supporting my claim with distinct arguments. I love to read, workout, and go to the beach. I hope to major in a business field, here at Carolina, but as of now, I am undecided. I look forward to future blogs and experiencing a new type of English class.

Hi, my name is Matilene Osho. I am a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My style of writing consists of using information to persuade others to an idea that I feel strongly about. In English 102, I hope to express my ideas with enough supportive evidence to make my argument stronger. I do not feel that using a high-level vocabulary necessarily makes a paper better. I plan to get to the main point of my argument with words that I feel are most effective yet understandable by a boarder audience.

Our group feels as if our target audience is directed towards college students like us, who are trying to establish their sense and style for writing. Our papers and comments will all be part of a learning process for us, as we explore blogging and developing our papers by forming direct opinions. For our English 102 class we are required to complete three units. Unit 1 involves the natural sciences, where we are required to use facts to form our own opinions about controversy. Unit 2 is based on psychology. We will do a type of case study on ourselves where we conduct a behavior modification experiment (for example, not cursing). Our group feels as if this will be the most interesting and fun unit because we are all intrigued as to how this will go for one another. Unit 3 involves the humanities, where we will study visual arts and extracting our own opinions about interpretation.

The group wants our tone and style to be more informal by using everyday events and occurrences to relate our audience. We want to share experiences through our writing to make it easier to relate to our styles. By opening up our writing to everyone, we are hopeful that we receive feedback that will improve our technique. We want people to enjoy our writing, as well as, to take something from it. One of our group goals focuses on communication,

Hope you enjoy our various writing styles and we encourage positive feedback!

I thought it was interesting that you guys explained to your readers what the subject matter was going to be throughout the semester,(ie breaking down the 3 sections). It seems that that would help give your readers a more defined sense about not only the specific subjects of your posts, but the motivations behind choosing those subjects. It also could give your blog a slightly more formal feel because it is a requirement for a class.

Looks really nice girls! I love your name and the format of your blog. I think that once you post assignments, they will be self-explanatory. Great work!

I liked the layout of the blog because it was unique and had a lot of colors; that sounds lame, but it shows that you guys actually played around with the application. The only thing I could suggest would be using more blue because then the whole theme would flow together, the color scheme and the title.

You said that you were going to try to relate to your readers by sharing personal experiences through your writing. That should prove to be interesting, because one hears about an informal tone a lot and about expressing opinions, but not very often do you run across papers that relate real-life experiences to the topic at hand. It's nice to see something new and original for a paper. I actually look forward to reading your group's work to see how well this idea works.

I think it was to your advantage to go into depth about what each of you wants to get out of this class. When people are reading your blog, they might comment about something that may help you in your writing style since they now know your weaknesses. I like the fact that your group is embracing a common factor that makes your group unique…being all ladies; the ladies in blue. But don’t get too feminist on us!

Good first post, ladies. I think you did a great job of introducing yourselves and the blog, but there are a few things I want to talk about. First is your decision to introduce yourselves before you introduce the blog; if this was the first post I'd found, I'd wonder why on earth I'm bothering to read about these people. Also, I think the formatting of your post is a little off. I know you had some trouble getting the pictures up, but if you'd taken the time to experiment with some different ways of aligning the pictures and text you might've found something a little more professional-looking. Finally, I think the writing of your blog description section is a little choppy and could've used another close edit. It has the feel of something that was written by a committee of people rather than one person, and you should do your best to avoid that feeling in the future. Still, you're off to a great start and I look forward to reading more.
